Five Pillars For Healthy Living
The world today has its own set of diseases, lifestyle diseases. How we live includes a lot of interlinked factors. How we eat, sleep, exercise, etc are an integral part of our wellbeing.
A Nutritionally Balance diet
Balancing diet is beyond calorie counting. Counting calories may not be needed in most of the cases. Diet must contain balanced amounts of healthy fats, good quality carbohydrates, easy-to-digest proteins & the relevant vitamins and minerals, appropriate for Healthy Living. The nutrients requirement changes as per age, sex, lifestyle and disease condition.
First step to balance diet is, about incorporating right kind of foods groups into your diet. Incorporating whole cereals, variety of pulses and beans, local and seasonal vegetables and fruits, good quality cold press or filtered oil suitable for the traditional cooking, and occasionally homemade snacks and sweets cooked with minimal sugar, salt and refined flour, is key to balance diet.
Being Active
Sitting has become the new smoking according to WHO. If you have a sedentary lifestyle then you’re at a greater health risk of getting multiple lifestyle disorders like obesity, hypertension, diabetes, etc. Being active is one way to keep your metabolism in check. You need to have regular muscular movement. Get moving and stretch every 45-60 minutes, walk around and keep using all muscles every day.
Exercise
We struggle every day with our hectic lifestyle and we either do not exercise at all or strain ourselves to over exercise. But there is a middle way. WHO (World Health Organization) recommends to work out for 150 minutes per week. 2-3 quality workouts per week are important and sufficient which will help prevent, various metabolic disorders such as Diabetes, Obesity, even certain types of cancers, anxiety disorders, etc., & keep you healthy.
Sound Sleep
To live healthy, it’s important to rest. Your body needs proper sleep to reset the hormones that support the daily functions of your body. It is essential to sleep according to your age or according to any disease/condition you may have. To aid proper weight gain or loss, your body needs to rejuvenate that helps to detox and reset your metabolism.
Stress Management
Having acute stress to get work done is okay, but having long term stress is not. Having too much pressure on yourself every day will lead to an array of lifestyle disorders like cardiovascular disorders, immunity dysfunction, blood pressure, etc. Unable to cope with stress will not help you with weight loss or gain & might lead to eating disorders. Stress management is an Art, and everybody has different ways to cope with stress, one of the simplest way to manage stress is to focus on breathing. Breath right and manage stress.
